Action Research: AI in a writing classroom
How can an AI agent help me better manage my class work and monitor progress in the Canvas LMS?
Student Inquiry
Student Experiment: the AI agent, Muse by Meta, was integrated into Canvas LMS by students using an API token located by one of the students in the group. Students then trained their Muse through their cell phones to complete specific Canvas and coursework-related tasks over a 14 day period. Some tasks assigned were ongoing. Other tasks were one-time requests.
Muse by Meta can be embedded into Canvas LMS for tracking due dates, sending student reminders through text messages, creating study guides from course content, creating weekly quizzes for study help, monitoring class rankings in their courses, quizzing students in real-time on course content, submitting completed work, filling out standard forms, and checking for AI use policies in syllabi to ensure student requests are ethical and aligned with course policies.
Students found these actions to be beneficial and ethical uses of Muse when it is embedded into their Canvas portal as a learning support.
Student findings
If Muse is able to access assignment pages and other resources in Canvas courses, provide students with their daily class rankings, and complete simple forms, is Muse able to access other pages in Canvas like course grades page, attendance page, and other instructor editing features and can Muse complete and submit assignments for students?
Professor Inquiry
Next step
Determine the capabilities of Muse in Canvas from an instructor's perspective.
